We are members of the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association. The International Association represents 150,000 members throughout Canada and the United States. The first Vancouver Island sheet metal union was originally formed in Victoria on July 3, 1909, back then we were known as the Amalgamated Sheet Metal Workers International Alliance, Local 134. In March 1940, we became the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, Local 276. Today Local 276 carries on the tradition of representing the skilled men and women working in the sheet metal and roofing trades on Vancouver Island.
Through the process of collective bargaining, Local 247 has been successful in negotiating benefits for many of its members. Although it varies by Employer, member MAY be eligible for such benefits as: Pension, Dental Care, Life Insurance, Drug and Optical plans, etc. Any such benefits, along with eligibility or benefits levels is typically located in your Collective Agreement under Health and Welfare heading. Questions about these benefits should be directed to the Plan Administrators, whose numbers are available through your store/plant managers, or your full-time Representative.
CUPW's national office is in Ottawa. The union has regional offices in Halifax, Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Winnipeg and Vancouver. There are CUPW locals with elected representatives in over 200 communities across the country. Ultimate decision-making power in the union resides with the membership. At the local level, members make decisions about bylaws, local activities, delegates to national convention, etc. At the regional level, local delegates develop proposals for union policies, objectives, procedures and negotiations' demands.
