Balderson Village Cheese Store continues to be a popular go-to destination for visitors looking to purchase award-winning Balderson Cheddar Cheese.Located in the village of Balderson, Ontario Canada, this country store was once the original site of the factory which produced Balderson Cheese for many years, beginning in 1881. The village of Balderson, Ontario, and later the cheese factory, were named after Sergeant John Balderson of the British army in the late 1860's. Operations for the production of Balderson Cheese have since been transferred to Winchester, Ontario where Balderson Cheese continues to be made today.
Oh Serious Cheese! I have a love hate relationship with you. Mostly love, with a little bit of hate for betraying me.
Here's the story. I discovered Serious Cheese with a friend in September of last year, in their first week or so of being open. We stopped in to look around but were enticed by the delicious looking Serious Grilled Cheese, so we both ordered one. Cheddar and Gouda on rye... how could you go wrong? Well the answer, you can't. It was, hands down, the best grilled cheese I have ever had in my life. My friend and I were so excited about this marvellous find that we took our two other friends there later that week. Four people had now ordered the Serious Grilled Cheese and all had agreed it was easily the best grilled cheese we had ever eaten.
(Not to mention the service was amazing! The servers were very friendly and informative and once gave me a free cheesestick because my grilled cheese was taking a while).
However, the story turns sour. I returned to Serious Cheese every few weeks to get a taste of that delicious, crispy sandwich, until one time... they changed it.
Dun dun dunnnn...
The rye bread, which, in my opinion MADE the sandwich was switched for a multigrain bread that was coated with sunflower seeds. I ate that sandwich, and yes, it was pretty good, but it did not come near to measuring up to its delicious predecessor.
I have never returned since.Read more

The first Empire Cheese Factory was built in the late 1870s on the farm of John Haig who was the first cheesemaker. The second cheese factory was built just to the east of the present factory. Some of the cheese makers in that plant were Tom Naylor, Charles Stephens, Jack Kitchen, Bob Maybee, and Les Shillinglaw. In the fall of 1952 the Kimberley Cheese Factory burned and in 1953 Empire and Kimberley amalgamated forming the current Empire Cheese & Butter Co-op. That same year, the current cheese factory was built with Les Shillinglaw as the cheese maker. Les was followed by Don Pollock. Our current cheese maker is Mark Erwin.
I have been going there since I was a little girl. My bus passed ot daily. Although I have moved away my family and I make a point of visiting everytime we pass it.Read more
