The Assaulted Women's Helpline provides a 24-hour crisis line for women. It allows women to reach out for help, assured of their anonymity and confidentiality. A telephone counsellor provides immediate crisis counselling, safety planning, as well as referrals to local agencies and support for the ongoing struggle to name and act against abuse. Counsellors never meet clients face to face as this is a telephone service only. Counsellors use a supportive approach that encourages women to look at their needs, and make their own informed decisions.
In operation since 1969, the Distress Line is an all-encompassing telephone service. Any feeling, any issue that disturbs your well-being or ability to cope is something to talk about. At any given time of day or night, people out there require our help. Whether they're depressed, lonely, overwhelmed or so distraught they are contemplating suicide, they will find a supportive and caring person at our end of the line. People of all ages, races, genders and social-economic groups call our confidential service, trusting that we'll always be here. This is a trust we will simply never betray. We are the people who are here, day or night, 24/7, to answer the calls from those who are reaching out for help. Callers may have a simple question, or they may be in distress. Either way, with more than 200 specially trained volunteers answering nearly 40,000 calls a year, we provide an integral, important and vital service in our community. All calls are confidential.
