Situated in the heart of Kitsilano and established back in 1981 in what had previously been the local church, Darby's was one of the first pubs in Kitsilano. Named after the owner Terry Lightheart's sheep dog, many feel that Darby is still looking over the flock today. Chef Alex Rotherham serves up some amazingly unique dishes that play on the traditional pub fare. The food prepared in this neighborhood pub, while unique, is much like the style of modern English gastropubs; simple and delicious fare, served with a passion, and at an affordable price.
I've been going to Darby's for over 10 years now. It's had it's ups and downs, and right now I think it's in an up place. The food has suddenly gotten a lot better in the last few months, better than some of chain restaurants. The room is a bit old and dated, but in the evening it has that feeling of being in a buddies basement bar-but with good food. I would certainly recommend Darby's as an alternative grown up dining environment for anyone in Kitsilano. You get food better than the big box chains, cheaper, and in an environment you don't feel the need to get dressed up for. Read more
The Oakwood Canadian Bistro is a fun and unpretentious neighbourhood room specializing in down-to-earth Canadian fare and casual service. The bistro welcomes with a chic Canadian log cabin feel, while the name pays homage to the reclaimed wood materials used in the space, as well as Kitsilano's tree-themed street names. A staff of passionate industry professionals ensures a quality, welcoming experience. The concept for the Oakwood Canadian Bistro was drawn from classic French bistros, in which families invited the public into their homes to eat simply prepared, locally grown food in a warm, casual setting. Striving to utilize local, Canadian ingredients whenever possible, Executive Chef Michael Robbins and his team are guided by a food philosophy focused on fresh, house-made dishes influenced by French techniques. The small, seasonally changing menu caters to market availability and the sustainability of the products.
Going along Broadway I have noticed the restaurant many times and finally decided to drop in for brunch to give it a go. We sat outside, we didn't mind waiting for a table there. Service was fine and the food came fairly soon. I had an excellent smoked ham benedict which came with cubed fries and a very fresh salad. Read more
