Cafe Diplomatico was first opened in 1968 by Rocco Mastrangelo Sr., shortly thereafter younger brother Paul came on board. The brothers envisioned having a typical Italian bar where Italian nationals could gather in the morning over coffee. At a time in Toronto when outdoor dining was almost unheard of, the sunny patio quickly caught on and now almost 4 decades later what started out as an innovation in the neighborhood has now set the standard. Over the years the popularity of the Diplomatico has caused the bar to expand into a full restaurant eventually taking over the store next door as well. The dip (as it is affectionately referred to by it's many regulars) has had staying power due to it's versatile & reasonably priced menu paired with it's comfortable & unpretentious atmosphere. Approaching 5 decades the restaurant is still owned by the Mastrangelo family, younger brother Paul now runs it with Rocco Mastrangelo Jr.

This was a sigularly phenomenal experience. All of our food was lick-your-plate excellent. I love their investment in local food producers. Their housemade breads, butters, pastas totally show it. We also were treated to a random complimentary amuse-bouche of a pork terrine with caramelized onions on crostini. Vanilla creme brulee was the single best creme brulee I've ever had--PERFECTLY burnt sugar. Truly amazing prices for food this good. ONLY down thought? Cocktails are expensive and taste like actual booze. Given that I'm normally a fruity liqour drinker, they were hard drinks to swallow! A connaisseur might feel differently. We are primarily a walk-in neighbourhood restaurant, however we do set aside some seating for online reservations for groups of up to 8 people. Reservations are held for 15 minutes and groups of more than four people will be seated once 60 percent their party has arrived. If 6:00 pm is too early for your group, you can walk in without a reservation. We always aim to seat you as soon as possible, however, we can never guarantee how long you may wait for a table. We serve a weekend brunch menu that also includes most of the items on our regular menu. Large groups of up to 13 people can reserve a table at 12 noon or 6:00 pm any day of the week. However, to serve groups of 9 or more quickly and impeccably, we require you choose a Nonna family-style sharing menu prior to your arrival. For groups of more than 13 who want to reserve a table we have two private dining options. Our private Wine Cellar and Rooftop Party Table each seat 20 comfortably.
