The business was established as a sawmill and lumber business by David Sherk in 1810 and passed on to family members over the following decades with expansion from a mill into thriving retail lumber business. The Sherk family is part of Port Colborne's history and has diversified into several branches and types of mills including saw, cider, threshing, copping and grist, as well as coal and lumber.
